Clophill Lakes
Description and Walk
Clophill Lakes is a nature reserve developed on the site of former gravel pits. Over time, the flooded pits have created a series of lakes and wetlands that now provide a rich and varied habitat for wildlife. The reserve is managed with a focus on conservation, encouraging biodiversity and supporting both aquatic and terrestrial species.
The site is especially popular with birdwatchers, as the lakes and surrounding habitats attract a wide range of species throughout the year. During our visit we were almost immediately greeted by a young kestrel, which posed on a signpost, even as we fumbled to change our camera lens. We even caught the bird in flight, which is why we have used that picture on this page excessively.
In addition to birds, the area is home to wildflowers, butterflies, and other insects, making it an important ecological haven. Its mix of lakes, meadows, and woodland paths ensures that each visit offers something new, whether it’s spotting seasonal migrations or enjoying the tranquillity of the water.

Parking
Parking is £3.50
Parking address: Shefford Rd, Beadlow, Shefford SG17 5TR
There is no shortage of car parking space. It might be true to say that they blew the budget on the car park. It could be that they are planning to relocate Glastonbury to Clophill? I mean, it's a big car park.

Entrance to Clophill Lakes

There is a huge car park.
Place/s to Eat
The Clophill Lakes cafe has a small internal seating area, plus outdoor seating for warmer weather. We felt that a lot was spent on the car parking area, but possibly not enough on the cafe. It could have been bigger with better cakes and that.

Further Information
Clophill Lakes is managed by the Greensand Trust. See their website here.
